Step 5: With the permission of the participant, audiotape the interview and take brief notes on a copy of the interview protocol.

Before beginning the interview, you test the tape recorder and the new 120-minute tape. Once the equipment checks out, you begin the interview. Because the interview consists of only a few open-ended questions with lots of latitude for the teacher to develop his or her ideas and points of view, you try to take notes about all the key topics and ideas that arise. Also, you note the gist of all prompts you use.
