Step 3: Before the interview starts, establish rapport with the participant by engaging in an informal conversation and demonstrating an interest in the participant's working environment.

You and your assistants discuss specific strategies ahead of time for establishing rapport with all participants. Because nearly all participating teachers have opted to be interviewed in their own classrooms (usually after school), you decide that it will be relatively easy to make casual conversation about the school and class environments.
