Step 9: Later the same day, verify the quality of the interview data, expand on brief protocol notes, and document any unusual or other interesting aspects of the interview experience.
After the interview and before the day is over, perform a quality check of the interview data. First, make sure the audiotape is properly labeled and rewind the tape back to the beginning to verify the recording's usability. If a second side of the tape was used, make sure the recording worked here as well.
Second, reread the notes you took during the interview. If necessary, improve the legibility of your notes and elaborate on them so that the gist of each answer is communicated. If there were unexpected circumstances that might have affected the participant's answers (or something about the participant's reactions that you didn't expect), note these situations on the front of the interview protocol.
If you were not able to audiotape the interview or the recording turned out poorly, you will need to spend even more time elaborating on your notes. Try to fill out the train of thought for each answer and write down key phrases as you remember them. Doing this on the same day as the interview is critical for good recall.
