Step 3: Before the interview starts, establish rapport with the participant by engaging in an informal conversation and demonstrating an interest in the participant's working environment.

Establishing rapport increases the likelihood that the participant will value the interview experience and speak candidly. Putting the participant at ease can begin as soon as you meet. As you introduce yourself, you also can engage in a few moments of informal chat not related directly to the evaluation or interview. For example, you can comment on your journey to the site and then ask a few questions about things in the room or building to show the participant your interest. As you wind up chatting, establish with the participant where you will sit for the interview and then unpack your materials.
