Instrument 14: Concerns Questionnaire

Purpose: To determine what project participants think about their experience during an innovation adoption process

Administered To: Teachers who attended a summer workshop and other workshops conducted throughout the school year devoted to the establishment of self-sustaining science and technology programs that serve the Native American populations and interested females in the mathematics and science profession

Topics Covered:

  • Implementation Characteristics: awareness
  • Instructional Practices: approach, content, technology
  • Instructional Preferences: project involvement
  • Limitations & Barriers: classroom resources, collaboration, implementation, interest, need, participation
  • Plans & Expectations (Teacher/Faculty): concerns, implementation activities, leadership
  • Self-Assessment (Teacher/Faculty): application of instructional methods, awareness, interest
  • Background Characteristics & Activities (Teacher/Faculty): current practice, experience, professional development activities, professional preparation/qualification, project involvement
  • Demographics (Teacher/Faculty): age, gender

Format/Length: 36 questions, 35 closed- and 1 open-ended, plus 13 demographic questions. The closed-ended items are 8-point Likert scales that range from "0" for "irrelevant" to "7" for "very true." The open-ended item asks participants to provide a brief written response describing their concerns.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to determine what people who are using or thinking about various programs are concerned about at various times during the innovation adoption process. The items were developed from typical response of school and college teachers who ranged from no knowledge at all of various programs to many years experience in using them. Therefore, a good part of the items on this questionnaire may appear to be of little relevance or irrelevant to you at this time. For the completely irrelevant items, please circle "0" on the scale. Other items will represent those concerns you do have, in varying degrees of intensity, and should be marked higher on the scale.


Please respond to items in terms of your present concerns, or how you feel about your involvement or potential involvement with the Rural Regional Training Model for Excellence in Science Math and Technology Teaching. We do not hold to any one definition of this innovation, so please think of it in terms of your own perception of what it involves.
