Software Survey -- Fall 1997

Issued: Monday, December 8, 1997
Due: Wednesday, December 10, 1997

Dear Student,
This semester you used new Cellular Biophysics software based on MATLAB in this subject. Your views of the software are important to us as well as to the National Science Foundation which sponsored the development of the new software. We would very much appreciate it if you took the time to complete the following survey. The survey refers to the 5 software packages which were used in this subject. These are:

RW Random walk model of diffusion. This package shows the space-time evolution of particles undergoing random walks. The package was used in one lecture only.
MD Macroscopic diffusion processes. This package shows solutions to the macroscopic diffusion equations. The package was used in lecture, in a recitation in the electronic classroom, and in homework problems.
CM Carrier-mediated transport. This package shows the state of carrier-mediated transport and the dependence on transport parameters. The package was used in lecture, in a recitation in the electronic classroom, and in homework problems.
HH Hodgkin-Huxley model. This package simulates the Hodgkin-Huxley model of the squid giant axon. The package was used in lecture, in recitations in the electronic classroom, in homework problems, and was the basis of a major project.
IC Voltage-gated ion channels. This package allows the design and analysis of a voltage-gated ion channel. The package was used in lecture, in a recitation in the electronic classroom, and in homework problems.

For each of the following statements, mark the appropriate box. Please also give a brief explanation of your response so that we will have a better basis for making improvements.

  • The software was more effective than the lectures in making the concepts clear.

Please respond to the remaining questions.

  • In the HH project, did you use the scripting feature of the software? Did you find it useful?

  • Did you either modify the MATLAB software in any way, write any MATLAB commands to extend the software's capabilities, or write special plotting commands to customized your plots? Please explain.

  • How much time was required to learn to use the software before you could begin to use the software to learn about the subject matter?
