In an attempt to increase the number of science majors, Comet College has a program to place freshman students taking introductory science classes in internships during the spring semester of the freshman year. A number of high-technology companies near the college offer these internships, which in many cases evolve into continuing part-time job opportunities. About 200 freshmen enroll in introductory science classes; of these, approximately 70 take advantage of the internship program.
You are in charge of the team evaluating the effectiveness of the internship program. You will follow all the students over their four years of college to see if there is a relationship between participation in the internship program and majoring in science. You also want to interview the students at the start of the sophomore year to better understand the nature of the internship experience and its impact. Your team has developed a protocol for a 90-minute interview that has a moderate level of structure. Although most of the questions are open-ended and directed at getting students to describe their internship experience and its influence, there also are a few closed-ended questions that ask students to rate different aspects of their experience.
You need to plan and carry out the administration of this interview. You have the resources to interview half of the interns (35) and one other team member to help conduct the interviews. Students understand that participating in evaluation activities is a requirement of the internship opportunity and that they do not receive any extra compensation.
