Instrument 4: Student Evaluation of Molecular Modeling Exercises

Project: Molecular Modeling for the Introductory Organic Chemistry Courses
San Francisco State University

Funding Source: NSF: Course and Curriculum Development (DUE)

Purpose: To develop molecular modelling/computational chemistry experiments for use in first-year chemistry courses

Administered To: Students with experience using the molecular modeling exercises

Topics Covered:

  • Course Evaluation: delivery, exemplary areas, materials, satisfaction
  • Impact on Outcomes: student understanding
  • Instructional Preferences: assignments

Format/Length: 6 questions total, 5 open-ended and 1 closed-ended 5-point Likert scale that ranges from "poor" to "great"

Student Evaluation of Molecular Modeling Exercises

To the Student: We would be grateful for your careful and thorough responses to the questions in this survey. It will be helpful in composing your thoughts to do the survey at home, with the Report Forms from the modeling exercises available for reference. Feel free to use extra sheets of paper if you wish. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

  1. Which of the exercises did you like best? Why?

  2. Which of the exercises did you like least? Why?

  3. What aspects of the administration of the exercises need improvement? For example, you might comment on the modeling directions, the accompanying lectures, the software, the physical layout of the computer lab, et cetera.

  4. Did the exercises help you in your organic lecture course, that is, C-130, C-333, or C-335? If so, please describe briefly in what ways you were helped.

  5. Please give your overall assessment of the molecular modeling experience by circling the appropriate number.
    (poor) 1 2 3 4 5 (great)

  6. Any other comments?
