The evaluator should "observe" the students in the act of participating in the online course experience. A strategy would be to examine the number and content of postings to bulletin boards or threaded discussions. Synchronous interactions could be observed by following live chat sessions between students and teachers. Following the live chats, telephone or live interviews with the teachers would also be worthwhile, in order to get their interpretations of what happened during each chat. In addition, it would be a good idea to administer pre- and post-course questionnaires to the teachers and students. The observation and interview results will provide an in-depth perspective about implementation that the evaluator can compare with the questionnaire results. To summarize, the evaluator should triangulate with the following four instruments: (1) online observation protocol, (2) teacher interview protocol, (3) teacher questionnaire, and (4) student questionnaire.
