With the intent of using this interview with 20 parents, a modest pilot is called for. Because you intend to make the protocol less structured, show it first to project staff to make sure they agree that the revised structure elicits all the kinds of information they are interested in. Second, contact parents of several students who took the Zoology Workshop the first summer. Ask a couple of these parents to talk their way through the interview with you. After making any necessary revisions, administer the interview again to a few more of these parents. This time, you should pay particular attention to time allocation and identifying additional prompts or probes that may help the interviewer in this less structured format.
